Deadbabes

Deadbabes is one of the new names in the Finnish metal scene. Finland inexhaustibly provides young and talented bands, so these five guys from Helsinki also found something to tell the world about.

Deadbabes themselves consider November 2001 as the starting point of their career, when Lasse and his friend Illu played several songs together. At that time, Illu was considered to be the best guitar player within his environment, and he had already been thinking for a long time about playing in a band. Both guys thought that their duo was a success and decided that it was a good idea to go in the same spirit. They wanted their band to attain a gloomy and scary aura, imagining the musicians wearing only black clothes; and they saw their music as something beautiful, melodious and indeed depressive.

Lasse, Illu and the bass player Juha spent several months rehearsing extensively, and they even played some gigs before deciding to change the line-up a bit. The founder members of the group had an impression that their former drummer and keyboard player were too focused on the music of the 80's. Deadbabes were very lucky that they were able to convince the drummer Jaani to join them, even though he was already involved in several other projects which were quite successful. His friend Karl felt honoured to be invited to the Deadbabes as a keyboard player. Also Antti and Jussi Oskari joined the band in 2003.

There is only one record in the band's discography to this day - an EP with a gloomy title The Drug (our review). It was recorded at Futurecords and released at Playground Music on September 26th, 2003. Right now the band is in the studio recording their first full-length album which is due to be released in August-September 2004.

In the meantime, the Deadbabes are on their quest for glory and fame - on small live performances in Helsinki and the surrounding area, usually together with other young bands such as Private Line. The Deadbabes' most significant live achievements may have been their performance at an aftershow-party during the Tuska festival at Semifinal and their concert as a supporting band for the popular Negative. At the moment, the band awaits a great moment in their live career, which is their first concert outside Finland. They already played at the Moscow After Midnight festival in March 2004. In Finland Deadbabes are trying to get as much publicity as possible. Lasse has already appeared in all kinds of radio shows. He has already been on Ylex, Helsinki Radio and City Radio, among the other stations. Also, Lasse has already managed to be shown on the TV. His appearances in the famous TV shows such as NightChat and Levyraati on MTV3 and Mehuhetki on SubTV are especially notable.

In May 2004 Jaani and Lasse found some major disagreements, and Jaani left the band. The name of a new drummer was announced immediatly - famous gothic producer and dj Kris Kylven. Antti and Jussi didn't like gothic influence on the band's music and left after playing two gigs with Kris.

Undoubtedly, it is a bonus for Deadbabes that nobody plays music such as theirs in Finland now. Deadbabes who grew up with the gloomy electronic music of the end of the last century are a modernised metamorphosis of The Cure, adapted to the modern Love Metal Goth youth. No excessive screaming guitar solos or weeping vocals, just precise rhythm, a sad gloomy voice, beautiful keyboards and lots of echo. There it is, the musical decadence at the beginning of the present century. The Finnish reporters classify Deadbabes' music as dark pop.

The musicians themselves claim that their music was influenced at most by AC/DC, Guns'n'Roses, Alice Cooper, Queen and Motley Crue. However, from the very beginning the band wanted to make nothing else but their own music which should not be similar to the source of influence. Lasse, the vocalist, says that he imitated singing styles of singers such as David Graham, Bono, Ian Astbury (of The Cult) and, of course, of the great Elvis.

The story behind the band's name is interesting. Initially they were called Deadbabies; that name was taken from a song by the great Alice Cooper. However, while working on the poster for their first concert, the designer made a mistake and wrote Deadbabes instead. At first everyone had a laugh, but then they decided that it sounded even more cool that way, and so it remained Deadbabes...
