Jonne Aaron & Larry Love
Vernissa, Tikkurila
26.09.2003

Melamory: First of all, I congratulate you with Gold award for "The Moment of Our Love" single.
Jonne & Larry: Yeah, thanks!

M: Did you expect it?
Jonne: No.
Larry: It was our debut single. So it's quite amazing that it's sold gold. It's quite rare when bands get gold singles in Finland. So, it was a surprise for us. But it's nice.

M: It's really sold out, 'cos I can't find it.
Jonne: Yeah.
Larry: It's now out of sale.
Jonne: And here in Finland albums sale more that singles.

M: You released album "War of Love" in March…
Jonne: Yeah, 28th of March.

M: You've got success quite fast. Did you think that when you released an album you would become stars?
Larry: Of course that was just a fantasy of ours.
Jonne: We had been dreaming.
Larry: We had thought about it for two years.
Jonne: …dreaming for two years.
Larry: …in our rehearsal room. It's always surprising when your dreams come true.

M: As far as I know you started quite long ago.
Jonne: Yeah, in 1997. Then I met Jay, our drum player. In high school.

M: So why did you record your album only this year, four years later?
Jonne: Because big record companies said it's not gonna work out.
Larry: And we have been playing with this group only for two years. There was another guitarist before. Then I came along. Right after that Christus came. So we had to rehearse a lot to get ready for album recording.

M: And you just sent your demo to record companies?..
Jonne: Yeah. And they said "no".

M: And how did you find GBfam?
Jonne: It was an accident.
Larry: We were recording our first single…
Jonne: …Bleeding.
Larry: It's on the record. It was a small label of our friends. We went to Cosmic Studio to record it and there was an owner of GBfam Records, which is now our record company.

M: And how would you describe your music now? Is it glam or what?
Jonne: Emotional rock'n'roll. *smiles*

M: You look so bright and gentle. How do the other teenagers react on you?
Larry: They all think Jonne is a woman.
Jonne: *smiles* Yeah. Then they listen to the album and say: "Nooo, I thought that guy was a woman".

M: Does it heart you?
Jonne: No. I like to look pretty. *smiles*
M: I like it too *blushes*.
Jonne: That's why I use mascara and wear make-up.

M: But how do you see Negative in five years, or in ten years?
Jonne: Hope we're alive. *laughs* I hope we're touring…
Larry: … across the universe.
Jonne: And everyone knows us.

M: And in future are you going to continue in the same way: bright, light?..
Jonne: Yeah! Why not? Well, if we don't get bored.

M: So, you think Negative is for a long time.
Jonne: Yes!
Larry: We've been planning to release outside Finland. In Scandinavia, in Russia…

M: Do you have any contracts already?
Jonne: Yeah. With Playground Music. The album should be released till the end of this year. We have some license deal for…
Larry: Is it for Russia?...
Jonne: *laughs* Oh, we don't know anything about it actually. We just play.
Larry: Yes, we just play and the businessmen take care.

M: "Suosikki" wrote that you want to release your album in Japan. Is it true, or you just have it in your dreams?
Jonne: No, it's serious.
Larry: We already have a contract.
Jonne: I think the album will be released next year there.
Larry: Maybe.
Jonne: *laughs* Yes, maybe.

M: And what are your nearest plans about next album, or single, or maybe video?
Jonne: We are gonna release next single in November. "Still Alive".
Larry: Now we are rehearsing new songs. I think our new stuff is almost ready for the next album. And we have started to record two songs.

M: So you have some ideas about next album already?..
Jonne & Larry: Yes!

M: And what about new video?
Jonne: "Still Alive".
Larry: Yeah.
Jonne: Maybe.
Larry: Yeah, maybe. *laughs* Maybe we will do the video.
Jonne: You know, the plans are open because we're gonna release the first album in Scandinavia, so maybe we're gotta go to Sweden and some other countries that time.

M: And I've heard you're gonna release DVD, aren't you?
Jonne & Larry: No, no!
Jonne: We are not gonna release it.
Larry: We decided that it's too early. We have just released our first album. Maybe after the second album.

M: Well, I was surprised to know about DVD…
Larry: We were also surprised. *laughs*

M: So, it wasn't your idea.
Jonne: No, it was from record company. It was from businessmen.
Larry: They are always thinking about money.

M: Ok. But there're so many bright colourful bands nowadays. Now we can see Technicolor in every magazine. Private Line is in Finland. There's a band The Darkness in England. Does it mean that glam is coming back?
Jonne: Yes, I think it's 80's fashion.

M: And was your own idea to start a band which is so bright and colourful?
Jonne: Yes. My biggest idols are Axl Rose and Michael Monroe.
Larry: We also had this idea when we understood that when people come to see our concerts, they want to see show, they want to see something different. It's nice to do something different, odd.
Jonne: Shining, bright!
Larry: And I don't think this is actually a glam rock. It's a…
Jonne: *laughs* …emotional rock'n'roll.
Larry: It's a combination of many elements.
Jonne: Yes, from 80's and 90's. I've been listening to Nirvana a lot. Curt Cobain is also one of my idols.

M: But do you think is Negative romantic or rocking band?
Jonne: Both. Our songs are sad, sad melodies and verses. In record it's more like love stuff. But when we play on stage it's more rock'n'roll.
Larry: We have these rock guitars but with beautiful melodies and songs, heartbreaking ones.

M: You mentioned Hanoi Rocks. Have you met Mike Monroe?
Jonne: Yes.

M: And how do Hanoi Rocks react on you?
Jonne: They like our band. They say it's a good rock band.
Larry: I think they see themselves young.
Jonne: *laughs* No.
Larry: They have been very polite. They said our record is pretty… fine. They are nice guys.

M: Have they seen you live?
Jonne: Once, Michael Monroe. It was in '99. And he said: "It looks like you've been listening to Nirvana".

M: And what other Finnish bands do you listen you?
Jonne: I like Private Line very much. We made some gigs together. HIM is great band. Well…
Larry: We have many good bands. The 69 Eyes…
Jonne: The Rasmus…
M: Do you like The Rasmus?
Jonne: I'm not listening to the band, I'm not a fan. But they are good. Songs are good.
Larry: I like bands like To/Die/For, Entwine… Sentenced…
M: Charon?
Larry: Yes! I like that kind of stuff, but I think I'm the only one.
Jonne: And I like Troubadour Dave Lindholm. Do you know it? He's like Bob Dilan.

M: And what about some tough stuff like Children of Bodom?
Jonne: No! *rattles*

M: And what non-Finnish bands do you listen to?
Jonne: Like I said Nirvana, Guns N' Roses, Skid Row…
Larry: Alice Cooper…
Jonne: The Rolling Stones…
M: Queen?..
Jonne: Yes! Freddy Mercury is great!

M: And do you know any Japanese bands?
Jonne & Larry: *surprised* No.

M: I supposed you have to. Ok… Haven't you tried to make any covers?
Jonne: I think the only cover is the theme song from "Titanic" movie "My Heart Will Go On".

M: Do you mean your started from your own stuff?
Jonne: No, we played Nirvana. And they I started to write songs. I was 14 or… 13 years old.
Larry: People always say that it's not right when you play cover-songs.
Jonne: I was the worst guitar-player, so I had to start to write my own songs. Anyway, now every one can come to me and tell me that that's not going right.

M: Have you started to write in English?
Jonne: Yeah…

M: Why not Finnish?
Jonne: Well…
Larry: English is a language of rock'n'roll. And of course if we were playing and singing in Finnish, we wouldn't be able to go outside Finland. When you're singing in English, you can go everywhere. There's no limits. Finland is so small place. It's boring to tour around. The same stages all the time.

M: Have you got any invitations outside Scandinavia?
Jonne: Not yet.

M: But tell us, what do you do besides Negative? Are you studying? Or maybe you have to work somewhere?
Larry: No, nobody works. This is our…
Jonne: …life! That's the only thing we wanna do.
Larry: But we do usual things. We go to movies, get ourselves drunk…
Jonne: Yeah. I saw Axel Rose when I was 12 years old and I thought "That's what I want to do, to be rock'n'roll star".

M: And what movies do you like?
Larry: "Interview With the Vampire".
Jonne: I like "Forrest Gump". It's a pretty story, beautiful.

M: And do you read books?
Jonne: No!
M: Why?
Jonne: I don't know. I can't read. *smiles* I'm lazy.
Larry: I've read some. I read a lot of books about other bands.
Jonne: I've read a story of Andy McCoy. It was hard stuff, so I don't want to read anymore.

M: So if you don't study and don't work and only play music… How many rehearsals do you have?
Jonne: Almost every day, when it's possible.
M: Not bad.
Jonne: I'm lazy to read, but I like to make music.

M: And do you use Internet?
Jonne: Yes, for our home site.

M: Do you reply to the e-mails?
Jonne: No… You know, they send a lot of letters…
M: "I love you, I want you"?
Jonne: Yeah. If you give them your finger, they will eat your whole hand. It's impossible to answer everyone. And it's unfair to reply to someone and not to the others.

M: And do you check other sites about Negative? I've found even a Spanish one.
Jonne: Yes. I didn't understand a word there. *laughs* They came to Helsinki when we played in Nosturi and in Stockmann.
Larry: They made all the way from Spain. Crazy people.
Jonne: Nice people. *laughs*
Larry: Crazy and nice. *laughs*

M: In the Internet it's possible to find some songs like "God Like You Style", "My Personal Sensitivity", "Touchless", "Space", "Black Light" and "Heroine". I'd like to know if all of them are your songs.
Jonne: Erm… yeah… Yes. Where did you find them?
M: They can be found in mp3 sharing programs.
Larry: Those are our demos.
M: All of them?
Jonne: Yes.
M: So many!
Jonne: We made three demos before we were singed.

M: Now your manager is Tiina Vuorinen? Does it make your happy?
Jonne: Yeah! We've just started.

M: Did she find you, or you asked her to help you?
Jonne: I think our manager contacted her.
Larry: Our manager is Tommi Liimatainen. Tiina only cares about gigs and makes some promos. She seems like a really tough woman.
Jonne: She may be our mom. *smiles*
Larry: But we have just started working together.
Jonne: I met her at Ruisrock for the first time. This summer.

M: And is it true that you will play with Hanoi Rocks in December?
Larry: That's not sure yet.
M: There's a rumour that you play with Hanoi Rocks in Tavastia on December, 27.
Jonne: We are not gonna play in Tavastia. If we play, we play on New Year in Caribia, in Turku.
Larry: We have another gig in Tavastia in December. It's called "Ruma Klubi".

M: About the gigs… Your tour looks really complete. Aren't your tired?
Jonne: Now I'm tired. My vocal cords are tired. I've lost my voice.
M: Because of many gigs?
Jonne: Yes. And I was so drunk on Tuesday. We were in Stockholm for some promotion.
Larry: When I'm tired, I think to myself that it's nicer to be here, than in some, you know, normal job. This is what we always wanted to do. That always make me smile.

M: You live in Tampere…
Jonne: Yes.

M: Don't you want to move?
Jonne: Why? Tampere is a nice place.

M: Ok. Finally, what would you like to say to your Russian fans?
Larry: We are coming soon! We're gonna do some fucking rock'n'roll.
Jonne: Do we have fans in Russia?
M: Quite many. Well, more than I could expect.
Larry: So we're starting our war of love soon in Russia, so be ready. War is coming.
Jonne: It's good war, nobody dies. Or maybe Christus, our guitar player. He jumped from the stage.
Larry: Yeah, at Ruisrock. It was awful.

M: And what happened with you in Oulu? Kaista wrote something about scandal there.
Jonne: We wanted to be bad guys. It was just…
Larry: …usual thing that we do when we are drunk.
Jonne: Yeah, after the gigs. After the shows we always want to take some booze.

M: So what did you do there?
Jonne: We… were… just… a little bit of wrestling. We had some fun.
Larry: And then suddenly the TV…
Jonne: *smile* Yeah, I took the TV and dropped it from the window.
Larry: It was amazing when it was flying.

We - Melamory, Pascalle and all the members of Crimson Dawn web-team - want to thank Jonne and Larry for being cute and sweet, Negative band for a great gig and Negative management for help.
